Sarasa Handloom - Matale

Sarasa Dumbara Handloom, a thriving family-run enterprise built with generations of craftsmanship by H. G. Weerarathne and his family, is situated in Matale. After her marriage, Dushanthi Chandrakanthi became involved in the production process and found an innate talent for the art form that made her the backbone of their operation. After over two decades of persistent commitment to their work, the husband-wife duo took matters further and officially registered their business in 2004 as Sarasa Dumbara Handloom with 4 employees. In 2007, they expanded their operations by employing people from the community, while still operating at home.

Now, Sarasa Handloom operates from two well-established factories in Matale. Currently, the company employs 15 direct employees and 60 indirect employees who work together to bring their creations to life. Among them, over 75% of their workforce comprises talented and skilled women artisans who are financially empowered and trained on a recognised form of cultural heritage.

Inscribed by UNESCO on its prestigious Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Dumbara Rata Kalala or Dumbara Weaving, is an inherited tradition of great cultural significance in the Central Province. It is usually shared from parent to children among practitioner families through observation and practice. At Sarasa Handloom (one of the few families who still practises the art), their community network helps by preparing the agave vera or hana plant fibres, dying them with natural colours, to weaving them into textiles with designs in a loom with a lath. Moreover, the Sarasa family is ensuring that they pass down and safeguard age-old techniques by training their workers in the weaving methods and traditional patterns and help shape the future of the local community.

They offer a wide range of products, catering to various aspects of your home decor needs. Their line of products includes cushion covers, wall hangers, table mats, and other handloom works. They also produce mats out of eakle sticks. Made entirely from 100% cotton threads and raw materials from surrounding villages, their products are stunning, high-quality, long-lasting, recyclable and can give your home a unique cultural character.

With customers from different corners of the world, their work has earned consistent praise from local and international clients for its quality. Sarasa Dumbara Handloom brings authentic, handcrafted beauty into your home and contributing to the preservation of a time-honoured tradition and the empowerment of talented women artisans.
