RHS Zone - Hasalaka

RHS Bees Honey, is a wild bee honey product that ranges from new honey to old honey as well as more unique products like ginger and cinnamon honey as well. The specialty in this product is that it is completely natural and, being wild bee honey, even the extraction process is fully natural, maintaining all the nutritional value of the honey.

Lasanthi Sanjeewani Perera (Sanju) is a graduate from the University of Colombo. Having worked in Colombo for a short period, after marriage she moved to Hasalaka in Mahiyanganaya.

Although she enjoyed working, as most women do Sanju she gave up working after becoming pregnant. Soon after the birth of her child she was advised to try bees honey to soothe the baby’s teething pains. She recalls how she asked her husband to bring some good bees honey from the village and distributed the excess honey to her relatives and friends who loved it and requested more. This gave birth to a business idea which has blossomed into an enterprise today.

During the initial stages of her business, she received a backlash from her family and other people who believed in the stereotypical idea that women should not and cannot lead their own businesses. But she wouldn’t let anything bring her down and instead she persevered even more. She began to do so well that she was soon being featured in articles and on TV interviews and seeing this her family became more encouraging and supportive of her enterprise.

She has supported many people in her village by providing them with job opportunities and chances to develop their skills as they engage in the manufacturing and supply processes. Although Sanju’s journey began as a coincidence, she grabbed the opportunity and moved forward. She has come a long was and hopes to further expand into an international export quality product as well as claiming a name as the best wild bee honey supplier in the country.
